Earlier this year, I wrote an ECCF blog about a fall semester undergraduate class at the University of Oklahoma (OU) that taught students about climate science, the impacts of climate change, and that gave them a look behind the scenes of the climate negotiations at the Paris COP21 meeting last December. Well, I’m happy to report that this fall this class is back — and it’s gotten even better.

While the mountains of the Northeast may not be the tallest nor the most remote compared to others within North America, they contribute just as much to the natural and cultural value of the surrounding landscape as any other. Stretching from the Catskills and Adirondacks of New York to the Greens of Vermont, Whites of New Hampshire, and all the way up to Katahdin in Maine, the mountains of the Northern Forest are a formidable and irreplaceable feature of the Northeastern landscape.
When we relaunched the ECCF a year ago, we wondered how our products would be adopted by the Climate Science Center (CSC) community. A year later, we are pleasantly surprised by our success and can’t help but thanking all of you for the support and enthusiasm that has fueled our accomplishments.
During the summer I am beyond fortunate to be one of the research supervisors on Seal Island NWR (restricted access). In addition, I recently finished my first semester as a Master’s Fellow with the Northeast Climate Science Center at UMass Amherst. SINWR is one of the study sites for my thesis focusing on shifts in the phenology of Sterna sp. of terns as well as their prey in the Gulf of Maine. These species include the Arctic, Common and the federally listed Roseate Tern.
Northern New Hampshire, January 2016. I was doubtful that I was going to find lynx tracks. As a Master’s student, I had spent most weekends doing field work in northern New Hampshire and never found lynx tracks. However, that was three years ago and I have since learned that distribution patterns can change considerably within that timeframe.
Climate negotiations, like last December in Paris, are complex, complicated, and not always fruitful. Last year, an innovative class for undergraduates at the University of Oklahoma gave students hands-on experience of how climate policy is made. This fall the class will go online for everyone around the world to participate. Here is my interview with the instructor and students of this class to summarize their experience with context to the recent Conference of the Parties (COP21) negotiations.
From a scientific standpoint, Hawaiʻi is a unique location for climate science in the Pacific Island Region. Since climate change is already impacting island nations throughout the region, you could call them the ‘canaries in the coal mines’ that serve as a warning to other areas.
Here in the South Central region of the United States we are confronted with a slough of climate issues. The annual workshop for our regional Climate Science Center (SC CSC) was held this past November in Fort Worth, Texas. Annual workshops are designed to encourage collaboration among scientists and stakeholders within the South Central Climate Science Center. Participants are split into discussion groups where ideas are ironed out and the first steps for a research proposal are started.
Standing near the Nisqually glacier, listening to National Park Service geomorphologist Paul Kennard and geologist Scott Beason discuss the impacts of climate change on Mt. Rainier glaciers, I felt the effects of climate change in a deeply profound and different way. I had known glaciers were retreating, but hadn’t realized that this process had been underway since at least before the 1970s. Nor did I know just how much glaciers had suffered in the Pacific Northwest this past year from unusually warm temperatures.
I recently joined the National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center (NCCWSC) as a Biologist through the Presidential Management Fellowship program (PMF). As a master’s student at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, I knew that I was interested in joining the federal government but was unsure about which agency or department would best align with my interests in applied ecology, wildlife conservation, and natural resource management.
